The next gathering of the Greater Mankato Leadership Delegation has been planned to focus a two-day retreat on “Strong Leadership during Challenging Times.”  This delegation had hoped to go on another InterCity Leadership Visit to Burlington, Vermont. However, due to many changing circumstances and feedback from delegates, the planning committee thought it was best to stay closer to home and focus on our more immediate challenges and opportunities.  “While we would have liked to have gone to Burlington to learn new ideas, we are excited about looking deeper at our own region and having time to come up with our own good ideas”, said Barb Embacher, Vice President of Greater Mankato Growth, Inc.

The retreat will be held on April 26-27, 2009 at the Oak Ridge Center in Chaska, MN where delegates will focus on how Business, Government, and Non-Profits all must find creative ways to pull together, utilize resources efficiently, collaborate, and find opportunities amidst the challenges.  The seriousness of this topic warrants a retreat setting that allows community leaders to step away from their work for a short time, to connect and build relationships with other community leaders, while reminding them to practice good stress management and personal wellness strategies during these stressful times.  “We felt it would be hard to accomplish our goals and keep our entire delegation engaged for the entire two days by staying in our own community.  We tried this back in 2007 and had a hard time keeping people from popping in and out, which really diminished the outcomes of the program,” said Denny Dotson, Planning Committee Co-Chair.

INTER CITY LEADERSHIP VISIT CHANGING FORMAT

The InterCity Leadership Visit (ICLV) planned to Burlington, Vermont on April 25-28, 2009 has been cancelled and will be replaced with a closer to home leadership summit. “The purpose of the ICLV is to bring together community leaders to advance the collective good of our community.  We believe a change in format and location this year will enable us to bring together a greater cross section of our community to address relevant topics currently impacting the Greater Mankato region,” said David Naples, the ICLV Planning Committee Chair.

Greater Mankato Growth and the ICLV Planning Committee are being mindful of our current economic environment and remain optimistic about a future visit Burlington.  “While Burlington is a great destination for future regional planning, it is more important right now to gather our leadership delegation to focus on more immediate topics of importance to our area,” said Barb Embacher, Vice President of Community Development for Greater Mankato Growth.

The ICLV delegates held a similar retreat in Mankato in 2007, which created momentum and shared thinking about talent development and retention strategies, energy sustainability and other community development efforts.  The ICLV Planning Committee is hopeful that this leadership summit will also foster strong collaborative relationships that will continue to strengthen our region’s vitality.

The InterCity Leadership Visit is a program of Greater Mankato Growth, Inc.  For more information, please contact Barb Embacher at 507.385.6644.
